The European Cultural Centre of Delphi (E.C.C.D.) was founded with the main purpose of reviving Delphi as a cultural and intellectual centre of Europe and the world. It was launched in 1960 with the initiative of Konstantinos Karamanlis. It was then that the Conference Venue in Delphi was built with the financial contribution of the Council of Europe. As mentioned in its foundation law, the aim of the E.C.C.D. is the "promotion of international cultural elements, which unite the peoples of Europe", with the "publication of studies on European Culture and Civilisation, the organisation of cultural meetings and other artistic activities ... "
